Trevor Manuel says Zuma's presidency was a disaster

The presidency of Jacob Zuma was a total disaster for South Africa, former finance minister Trevor Manuel said yesterday.

He delivered the keynote address at the Archbishop Thabo Makgoba Development Trust Public Lecture at the University of the Western Cape.

Manuel said he made no apologies for sharing his view.

He said many people would argue that Zuma merely ignored the NDP, while paying lip service to having initiated the process. He went on to state that Zuma’s attention and priorities were elsewhere.

Ramaphosa's North West task team extends probe to municipalities

President Cyril Ramaphosa's inter-ministerial committee task team, which is looking into the state of the North West province, has started meeting with leaders at different municipalities.

Committee head Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma said they will visit at least two municipalities this week to assess their state.

Ramaphosa first placed the province's health department under administration, and appointed the committee, following the outbreak of violent protests in the platinum-rich province, as residents demanded the removal of Premier Supra Mahumapelo.

Dlamini-Zuma said that the justice cluster would take on the various claims of corruption and maladministration.

South Africa is working on a Climate Change Bill

A Climate Change Bill is on the cards for South Africa.

Speaking at a press briefing before introducing her department's budget to the National Assembly yesterday, Environmental Affairs Minister Edna Molewa said in addition to finalising the National Climate Change Adaptation Strategy, the department had developed a draft Climate Change Bill.

She said the draft bill was before a committee of Cabinet and would later be referred to Cabinet for approval before it goes through the parliamentary process.

Also making headlines:

The Portfolio Committee on Labour said it was disappointed that members of the South African Federation of Trade Unions disrupted a committee meeting meant to discuss the National Minimum Wage Bill yesterday.
