Another motion of no confidence against Athol Trollip

The Nelson Mandela Bay special council meeting to hear a motion of no confidence against Mayor Athol Trollip will resume today.

The previous two sittings descended into chaos and were adjourned. Speaker Jonathan Lawack announced at the previous sitting that the meeting was permanently adjourned, and that the opposition would have to petition for a new special council meeting to take place.

However, the municipality subsequently issued a notice to say that the meeting would reconvene today.

The coalition government has had a minority of 59 seats in the 120-seat council since a fallout with the United Democratic Movement.

 

Mabuza says SA should invest in early childhood development to fight unemployment

South Africa should invest more in early childhood development in order to achieve better learning performance outcomes at later stages of development and skills acquisition, Deputy President David Mabuza said today.

Mabuza told a summit on human resource development that the country had a youth population whose prospects of employment were undermined by a lack of education and skills.

Official data shows South Africa has a high unemployment rate of about 27 percent of the labour force, and that this figure is even higher among young people at more than 50 percent.

 

And, North West appoints finance MEC as acting premier

Following the announcement by the North West ANC provincial executive committee that North West Premier Supra Mahumapelo would now only be taking "a leave of absence" and not resigning, the North West provincial executive committee has moved to appoint Finance MEC Wendy Nelson to the position of premier in an acting capacity.

The ANC in the North West had announced on Tuesday night that embattled Mahumapelo had resigned as premier, only for him to stand defiant on Wednesday morning, saying he won't be going anywhere.

Mahumapelo's spokesperson Brian Setswambung confirmed that Mahumapelo was "officially on leave following discussions in the ANC PEC".
