A ruling by the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria yesterday allowing social grant payment provider Net1 to continue deducting money from the bank accounts of grant beneficiaries was devastating, Black Sash's lawyers said.

This comes after Acting Judge Corrie van der Westhuizen ordered that amendments to regulations governing the payment of social grants should not hinder deductions from the beneficiaries' bank accounts.

The ruling has enabled companies to take deductions from social grants, the lawyers said and added that it was devastating because of the impact that social grants have had on people's livelihoods but also because of the impact that deductions have had.

 

The ANC said yesterday that Judge Bashier Vally's reason for ruling in favour of the DA's application that President Jacob Zuma furnish them with reasons why he reshuffled his Cabinet was politically motivated.

National spokesperson Zizi Kodwa said that the Constitution says the President must appoint ministers and deputy ministers and assign them roles. That decision, as well as the decision to dismiss a minister, is political.

Kodwa said the party would encourage Zuma to appeal Vally's judgment or have it reviewed.

 

Former African Union chair and ANC National Executive Committee member Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma has indirectly urged the ANC not to use the fact that she is President Jacob Zuma's ex-wife when the party elects its next president in December.

Opposition parties and some factions within the ANC do not want Dlamini-Zuma to be the country's next president because of her previous relationship with Zuma.
