Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa has apologised for the manner in which the Marikana massacre unfolded, saying he was sorry for the type of language he used at the time.

Speaking at Rhodes University, Ramaphosa told students that he had intervened in the Lonmin mine strike in Marikana to prevent further deaths.

Ramaphosa was responding in a question and answer session with students where one student asked him to address the Marikana massacre.

 

The time is right to begin finding a South African identity beyond race, ANC National Executive Committee member Lindiwe Sisulu said yesterday.

Sisulu argued at the Luthuli House media briefing that the reason why South Africa remained with black, white, Indian attached to its status was that government wanted to make sure that it had kept to the programme of transformation.

She was speaking in her capacity as the chair of the ANC NEC subcommittee on social transformation.

 

Zimbabwean opposition Movement for Democratic Change party leader Morgan Tsvangirai has launched a youth voter registration and education campaign – as the country gears up for elections in 2018.

Tsvangirai, who is in talks with other smaller opposition parties to forge a grand coalition, urged the youth to register for the polls in their numbers.

He said a massive voter registration and turn out at the polls would prevent President Robert Mugabe from "stealing" another election.
