The UDM's application to force National Assembly Speaker Baleka Mbete to conduct the vote of no confidence in President Jacob Zuma by secret ballot will be heard on Monday, May 15, the Constitutional Court said.

The UDM filed an application with the court after Mbete said the current rules of Parliament did not permit a vote of no confidence by secret ballot. She, however, said she was not opposed to a secret ballot in principle.

In her affidavit, she asks the court to make a finding on the constitutionality of the parliamentary rules so that they can be redrafted, if necessary.

 

Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba has described his predecessor Parks Tau’s administration as one of self-enrichment, mismanagement and incorrect priorities and has promised not to do the same.

Addressing his first State of the City address yesterday, Mashaba said his administration was going to focus on the basics, by paying attention to the bread and butter issues of service delivery.

His administration had inherited “enormous challenges” and was working on rebuilding trust with residents, he said.

 

The National Union of Mineworkers yesterday publicly voiced its support for Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa to become the next president of the country.

Num said that Ramaphosa had brought many changes in the country's workplaces, especially in mines and added that he would bring more changes when he became president.

Ramaphosa was Num's first general secretary when the union was launched in 1982. The union joined Cosatu, South Africa's largest labour federation in 1985.
