EFF abandons court challenge for secret ballot in anti-Supra motion

The EFF wants to test the resolve of ANC members of the North West legislature to get rid of embattled Premier Supra Mahumapelo.

The party is abandoning its court challenge for a secret ballot in the motion of no confidence against him.

Instead, it will now write a letter to the speaker of the legislature to demand that the motion be debated urgently.

EFF leader Julius Malema said they have no sympathy for Mahumapelo and added they wanted to expose crooks inside the ANC.

Water department is in 'shambles', admits Nkwinti after taking over from Mokonyane

Water and Sanitation Minister Gugile Nkwinti conceded to MPs that the department he had inherited earlier this year from Nomvula Mokonyane is "a mess".

At a briefing on the department's budget and strategic plan, presented to the parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Water and Sanitation yesterday, MPs grilled officials and the minister on how they were going to put things right in a "collapsed department".

Nkwinti assured MPs that he had a plan to deal with the problems.

Guptas to apply for leave to appeal aircraft ruling

Members of the Gupta family are today expected to apply for leave to appeal a ruling handed down in the South Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg which ordered them to return a luxury aircraft that they were leasing.

The interim order was handed down by Judge Fayeeza Kathree-Setiloane on March 19.

The Guptas lodged the application on March 23, a few days after the ruling.

Kathree-Setiloane's order gave the Guptas 15 days to ensure that the aircraft, a luxury Bombardier Global 6000 business jet, is returned and held in a hangar at the Lanseria International Airport.
