It's all systems go for grant recipients, the department of social development assured South Africans yesterday.

The Constitutional Court slammed Social Development Minister Bathabile Dlamini for "incompetence" and for failing to perform her constitutional obligation to find a new service provider, after the court found that the contract with Cash Paymaster Services was invalid.

Department spokesperson Lumka Oliphant said that all was on track for the payment of grants from April 1.

Payments are made through various channels including merchants, points of sale, banks, ATMs and the South Africa Social Security Agency pay points.

 

President Jacob Zuma has appointed an interim board for the South African Broadcasting Corporation the presidency said yesterday.

The members appointed are Khanyisile Kweyama, John Matisson, Mathatha Tsedu, Febbe Portgieter-Gqubule and Krish Naidoo. The interim membership will last six months.

The former management was accused of unnecessary expenditure, corruption, censorship and other allegations that crippled the organisation.

 

The Commission of Inquiry into Higher Education and Training will today host a public hearing in Centurion.

Witnesses expected at the hearing include Professor Ahmed Bawa from the University of South Africa, Irvin Phenyane from the Higher Education Parents Dialogue Forum and Advocate Lester Basson, chief master of the high court.

The commission was established in January 2016, to investigate the feasibility of free higher education in South Africa.
