The R7.8-million President Jacob Zuma had to repay for his Nkandla upgrades was far too little, several opposition parties said on Monday.

In its judgment on March 31, the Constitutional Court ordered Treasury to determine the "reasonable amount" Zuma should repay. It gave Treasury 60 days to come up with the amount. Once the court had approved this, Zuma would have 45 days to pay.

The Democratic Alliance called on Zuma to repay the money immediately and out of his own pocket.

The United Democratic Movement said the amount the Treasury had determined that Zuma should pay back was an insult, while the Congress of the People called it "daylight robbery".

Economic Freedom Fighters spokesperson Mbuyiseni Ndlozi said R7.8-million was not enough.

Ndlozi said the EFF was, however, celebrating the restoration of the Public Protector’s reputation and power.

 

Parliament's ad hoc committee to select a new Public Protector will on Tuesday announce the names of nominees and applicants for the job.

The committee had received 21 nominations.

Advocate Thuli Madonsela was among the nominations, even though by law she was limited to only one term in office. Her seven-year term would end in mid-October.

The shortlist of candidates would be tabled in Parliament by the end of August.

The new Public Protector was expected to assume office by November 1, but this would depend on other factors.

 

The man accused of spying on the African National Congress for Western Cape Premier Helen Zille is expected to appear in the Bellville Specialised Commercial Crime Court on Tuesday.

Western Cape crime intelligence officer Paul Scheepers, faces 55 criminal charges. These include fraud, tender fraud, violating the Electronic Communications Act, perjury, and defeating the ends of justice.

He was allegedly in possession of a "grabber" - a sophisticated surveillance device that could intercept cellphone calls and track the location of cellphones.

The ANC alleged that Zille hired Scheepers to spy on the ANC. It laid charges at the Cape Town Central police station against her for "employing a private covert intelligence investigator to execute illegal communications surveillance work on state land and property".

Scheepers was arrested in May 2015, after raids on his office at the SAPS crime intelligence's provincial premises in Bishop Lavis and the offices of his company, Eagle Eye Solutions Technology, in Southfield.
