Ramaphosa is 'very pro business' says Presidential investment envoy

President Cyril Ramaphosa is “very pro business, very pro capital” and recognises the importance of this in attracting local and international investment, according to businessperson Phumzile Langeni. 

Langeni, who is the executive chairperson of Afropulse, is part of the Presidential Special Envoy for Investment announced by Ramaphosa on 16 April.

Together with Mcebisi Jonas, Trevor Manuel and Jacko Maree, Langeni has been tasked with attracting $100-billion in new investments over the next five years in order to boost South Africa’s economy and create employment.           

Ramaphosa, who has a union background, is often accused by labour of being too pro business, and by business of being too pro labour.

Langeni said it was to be expected that labour would have differing views to business and, to some extent, government.

 

ANC to launch manifesto forums ahead of 2019 elections

The ANC yesterday announced that it would launch manifesto forums across the country to hear what South Africans want from the governing party ahead of the 2019 general elections.

The ANC held a manifesto consultative workshop in Irene, Pretoria, where it engaged with party members, academics, civic organisations as well as political analysts and economists.

The party's head of policy Jeff Radebe told journalists at a briefing that discussions were going well, emphasising that the manifesto workshop was different from the ANC's 54th national conference resolutions.

 

Policy changes mooted for SABC

Communications Minister Nomvula Mokonyane has invited the public and industry role players to provide comment on her department's plans to revise policy in the public broadcasting sector.

Mokonyane told the media in Pretoria yesterday that her department wanted to accelerate plans to review the changing environment in the sector amid financial and organisational challenges faced by the SABC.

There have been strong calls for the SABC's funding model to be reviewed.

The minister said that the changes to how the SABC was funded and operated were long overdue.
