Cash-in-transit heists could lead to losses of R470m

Cash-in-transit heists will lead to cash losses of R470-million this year if the current trend continues, the Portfolio Committee on Police heard yesterday.

The meeting brought together a range of stakeholders concerned with cash-in-transit heists, including the South African Banking Risk Information Centre.

Forty-nine vehicles have been lost so far this year, at a cost of R64-million to the industry, according to Sabric's presentation to the committee.

Police Minister Bheki Cele said cash-in-transit heists were a form of terrorism.

 

Life Esidimeni claimants receive R159m payout from Gauteng government

The Gauteng government has paid out R159 460 000 to the claimants following the Life Esidimeni arbitration, it said yesterday.

All financial claims have been settled in compliance with the award given by retired deputy chief justice Dikgang Moseneke following the alternative dispute resolution process entered into with the families affected by the Life Esidimeni tragedy.

At least 144 psychiatric patients died after the Gauteng Department of Health moved 1 700 psychiatric patients from Life Esidimeni homes into ill-equipped NGOs and State facilities in 2016.

Section 27 says not all the claimants of the Life Esidimeni arbitration have received their money.

However, Section 27's Mark Heywood told a news agency that his organization had no reason to be apprehensive that the Gauteng government had not made the payments.

The Gauteng government said on Wednesday that it has paid out R159 460 000 to the claimants of the Life Esidimeni arbitration.
