Three former director-generals in the Department of Public Works, who were facing criminal charges following the revamp of President Jacob Zuma’s Nkandla homestead, are in the clear.

Solomon Malebye, Sam Vukela and Siviwe Dongwana were facing financial misconduct charges after the costs of security upgrades at Nkandla ballooned.

More than R200-million was spent on the security upgrades to Zuma’s home.

But the National Prosecuting Authority declined to prosecute, according to a Parliamentary reply by Police Minister Nathi Nhleko published on Monday.

 

Sentencing proceedings for former paralympian and convicted murderer Oscar Pistorius are expected to continue at the High Court in Pretoria today.

Sentencing procedures had been set down for a week before Judge Thokozile Masipa, who originally sentenced Pistorius in October 2014.

In October 2014, Masipa sentenced him to five years behind bars after finding him guilty of culpable homicide.

The National Prosecuting Authority successfully approached the Supreme Court of Appeal to argue that he should have been found guilty of murder.

 

South Africa is prepared to host the world's top scientists, civil society members and policymakers when the 2016 International Aids Conference convenes in Durban in July, Minister in the Presidency Jeff Radebe said.

Radebe was addressing media yesterday on the preparedness of the city ahead of the twenty-first Aids conference that will be held from July 18 to 22.

He said all spheres of government were working closely to ensure the conference was well organised.

Radebe said the province of KwaZulu-Natal and the city of eThekwini had over a number of years acquired great experience and efficiency in hosting large-scale national and international events.
