The National Prosecuting Authority and President Jacob Zuma will on Friday apply for leave to appeal a court ruling that corruption charges against the president be reinstated in the High Court in Pretoria.

On April 29, the full bench of the High Court in Pretoria found that President Jacob Zuma should face the 783 charges of corruption.

However, the NPA and Zuma announced that they were applying for leave to appeal the high court's ruling. If leave to appeal is granted, the matter will go to the Supreme Court of Appeal.

After a seven-year battle by the DA, the court ruled that the decision to discontinue the prosecution against Zuma should be reviewed and set aside.

 

Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe said on Thursday that the introduction of local bank notes by the central bank later this year, which he called a "surrogate currency", would help prevent foreigners taking greenbacks out of the country.

He also said the shortage of US dollars in the economy would be overcome soon, although he did not elaborate.

In the grip of its worst drought in a quarter century that has left 4 million people facing food shortages, the southern African nation is also running out of cash, forcing the central bank to impose limits on imports and withdrawals from banks.

But Zimbabweans are worried that the central bank's plan to introduce banknotes, or "bond notes", in October to ease the dollar shortage could open the door to rampant money printing, as it happened in 2008 when inflation hit 500 billion percent, wiping out people's savings and pensions.

 

African National Congress members have been warned against standing as independent candidates in the upcoming local government elections as such action would result in their expulsion from the party.

ANC KwaZulu-Natal chairperson Sihle Zikalala issued the warning in Pietermaritzburg on Thursday night during his keynote address at an event held to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the June 16 Soweto uprising.

He said the leadership had noted that some ANC members, who had not made it as councillor candidates, were considering standing as independents.

He said the councillor nomination lists was completed and it was time to move on.
