ANC in KZN hits back at detractors and defends cabinet reshuffle

SAHRC is concerned about political killings

And, President Zuma studies land Expropriation Bill amid objections

Defending its decision to reshuffle the KwaZulu-Natal government’s cabinet, the ANC in the province yesterday said no one had the right to tell it what to do.

Provincial secretary Super Zuma said they dismissed as naked opportunism the growing chorus of criticism that had been levelled against the movement over the recent cabinet reshuffle.

Zuma said the ANC had its own internal processes and a right to decide where to deploy its members.

He said the evaluation was done according to tried and tested internal mechanisms.

The South African Human Rights Commission (or SAHRC) voiced its concerns over recent political killings in the build-up to the August 3 local government elections.

The commission had also welcomed police Minister Nathi Nhleko's decision to form a special task team that would investigate politically linked killings around the country.

SAHRC spokesperson Gail Smith said over the past five years there had been about 50 politically related killings, predominantly in KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga.

President Jacob Zuma yesterday acknowledged receipt of formal objections to the proclamation of the Expropriation Bill after the DA petitioned him to send it back to Parliament.

The presidency had received the Expropriation Bill of 2015 from the National Assembly for assent and signing into law.

It had also received objections to the bill.

On Tuesday, the DA said the party had been advised by its lawyers that the bill violated sections 25 and 26 of the Constitution which respectively dealt with the right to property and the right not to be evicted without a court order.

It said Zuma should therefore send it back to Parliament to be brought in line with the Constitution.
