SABC interdict will be used in fired journalists' Labour Court case

The High Court interdict against the South African Broadcasting Corporation's policy to not show footage of violent protests will be used in today's Labour Court case in which four of the employees that were fired by the broadcaster will be challenging their dismissal.

The lawyer of four employees, Solidarity's Anton van der Bijl told a news agency that the interdict would impact their case because to a certain extent the SABC and court were of a view that the current policy was unlawful.

He said their priority [in the Labour Court] was that the dismissals and suspensions be set aside and the journalists go back to work.

 

A comprehensive campaign that encompassed all the existing policies to fight Aids was required, international philanthropist Bill Gates said yesterday.

Gates, the founder of the Microsoft Corporation, said that the existing policies of targeting vulnerable groups, ensuring treatment and promoting prevention were essential.

Speaking at the 21st World Aids Conference in Durban, Gates said that it was particularly important to reduce the number of new infections.

Gates also said there needed to be continued funding into researching for a vaccine or a cure.

 

South Africa's progress depended not only on an effective local government, but the ability of municipalities to work with all spheres of government, African National Congress deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa said.

Ramaphosa was engaging professionals and local business people at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Westville, yesterday evening.

He said the ruling party's vision for local government extended far beyond the efficient delivery of basic services.
