The KwaZulu-Natal government should establish a commission of inquiry into what appeared to be politically-motivated murders in the province, the African National Congress in the province said yesterday.

Two ANC members were shot dead hours apart on Monday bringing the total number to 12.

Provincial ANC spokesperson Mdumiseni Ntuli said the killings appeared to be a deliberate and well-orchestrated campaign to cull the party’s candidates for councillors ahead of the upcoming local government elections,

Ntuli called on KZN Premier Willies Mchunu to consider establishing an inquiry into the killings.

 

The stalemate between Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan and South African Airways chairperson Dudu Myeni is rapidly driving the national carrier to total collapse and this cannot be allowed to happen, said the Democratic Alliance yesterday.

DA MP and shadow deputy minister of finance Alf Lees said the DA believed there should be an application to the relevant section of the Companies Act by applying to a high court for an order to place SAA under supervision and commence business rescue proceedings.

He said Gordhan had been unable to implement the turnaround plan he announced in February 2016, which included the restructuring of the SAA board, the possible part privatisation of SAA and the amalgamation of SAA with SA Express.

Evan Mawarire, the Zimbabwean pastor whose #ThisFlag social media campaign contributed massively to a significant stayaway two weeks ago, says he is now “seriously” worried about returning home after hearing President Robert Mugabe denouncing him.

Pastor Mawarire left for South Africa "to clear his head" after subversion charges against him were dropped by a Zimbabwe court last week.

At a state funeral yesterday Mugabe spoke about Mawarire for the first time. He accused the pastor of encouraging violence.

The state-controlled media had accused the French and US governments of assisting Mawarire’s #ThisFlag campaign.
