Mkhwebane says Zuma has no grounds to stop State capture inquiry

President Jacob Zuma has no grounds on which to attack the remedial action former public protector Thuli Madonsela set out in her State of Capture report, her successor says in court papers.

Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane said Zuma’s application for a court to review and set aside Madonsela’s recommendations lacked any prospect of success.

She further argued that Zuma cannot decide who will chair the commission as he had a direct personal or financial interest in its outcome.

 

SACP to elect new leaders

The South African Communist Party is expected to elect new leaders today as its fourteenth national congress continues in Johannesburg where incumbent secretary general Blade Nzimande is expected to be re-elected.

Delegates will nominate candidates for the central executive committee and later cast their votes.

First deputy general secretary, Jeremy Cronin is not standing for any leadership position, while second deputy secretary Solly Mapaila is not contesting for the secretary general position as had been widely speculated.

 

Mkhize optimistic that troubles in the ANC can be fixed

The ANC's issues will be fixed and the tripartite alliance will emerge stronger after the national elective conference in December despite on-going instability in the alliance, the party’s treasure general Zweli Mkhize said yesterday.

Addressing delegates who attended the week-long 14th National Congress of the South African Communist Party in Johannesburg Mkhize said the ANC believed that the alliance was essential in taking forward the revolution.

This comes after the SACP expressed it’s concern about the state of the country under the leadership of President Jacob Zuma and the news of State capture allegedly by the controversial Gupta family.
