Making headlines: Duduzane Zuma charged with corruption; Sassa says payment system has been stabilised; And, Sars’ Moyane to brief media

 

Duduzane Zuma charged with corruption

Duduzane Zuma, the son of scandal-plagued former South African president Jacob Zuma, has been charged with corruption, his lawyer Rudi Krause said today.

Duduzane Zuma has apparently been overseas since February; however, his brother, Vusi Nhlakanipho Zuma, died recently of lupus and Duduzane returned to South Africa to attend his funeral.

Krause said Duduzane intends contesting the charges.

 

Sassa says payment system has been stabilised

The South African Social Security Agency, which has been experiencing problems in paying beneficiaries, today said it had stabilised its system and had paid out about R746-million of the one billion rand for grant payments.

In a statement, Sassa said it pays more than 12-million beneficiaries per month and about 700 000 of them have new Sassa cards.

It said it was these beneficiaries who could not draw their money at banks, "notwithstanding the fact that Sassa had already deposited funds into their accounts". 

Sassa apologised for delayed payments and said efforts had been made around the clock to solve the problems.

Acting Sassa CEO Abraham Mahlangu said "beneficiaries who encounter any problems can contact Sassa tollfree on 0800 60 10 11 or inbox Sassa on social media. 

 

And, Sars’ Moyane to brief media

South African Revenue Services commissioner Tom Moyane is set to brief the media today about ‘current matters’ as he continues to face an inquiry into the governance of the tax agency, his lawyer Eric Mabuza said.

In particular, Moyane would share his response to a letter from President Cyril Ramaphosa which he received on Friday.

Ramaphosa was replying to a letter previously sent by Moyane in which he “was demanding that the President should terminate one or both of the inquiries into the governance of Sars.”

Moyane sent the letter last week, after former Judge Robert Nugent who is heading the inquiry into governance at Sars previously dismissed similar requests.
