Government to study ICC ruling on Omar al-Bashir

Government will peruse the International Criminal Court ruling that found South Africa failed to arrest Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir during the African Union Summit in June 2015, the Department of International Relations said yesterday.

Government will study the ruling and its implications and seek legal opinion on available options.

The ICC yesterday found South Africa had failed in its duty to arrest Bashir when he was in the country.

However, the ICC has decided not to refer the matter to the Assembly of State Parties and the United Nations Security Council.

Civil society organisations to tackle corruption at special conference

A civil society conference aimed at tackling corruption as well as State capture is due to take place on July 18, Save South Africa and the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation announced yesterday at Gordon Institute of Business in Johannesburg.

The Conference for the Future of South Africa is due to take place on struggle stalwart, Nelson Mandela’s birthday as the organisations feel that they “have a contract with Madiba to safeguard and nourish [the] democracy for present and future generations”.

More than 1 000 people from various sectors of society are expected to be there.

Organisations expected to attend include the Outa, SaveSA, the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation and Section27.

And, SACP calls for parliamentary ad hoc committee to investigate SOEs

About 150 members of the SACP gathered outside the gates of Parliament yesterday to picket and hand over two memorandums – one for the police, the other for Parliament.

The party reaffirmed its call that President Jacob Zuma should step down, and that the Gupta's citizenship should be revoked.

The SACP called on the police to expedite the investigation into the alleged assassination attempt on its second deputy secretary general Solly Mapaila.

During a Chris Hani memorial lecture in Ekurhuleni on April 10, which was also attended by Zuma, a firearm was apparently pointed at Mapaila.
