Sparks fly at heated ANC policy conference

President Jacob Zuma's supporters have claimed victory after what has been described as heated policy debates yesterday on the expropriation of land and free higher education.

Several sources told a news agency that Zuma and those associated with him - and by extension, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma’s presidential campaign – clashed with Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa’s backers in the economic transformation commission and pushed through the policy proposal to have land expropriated without compensation.

Senior ANC leaders Enoch Godongwana, the head of economic transformation sub-committee, and ANC MPs Pravin Gordhan and Derek Hanekom were outnumbered in a room full of Zuma allies.

 

Malema's land invasion trial set to begin in Newcastle court

The trial of the EFF leader Julius Malema is expected to begin in the regional court in Newcastle today.

Malema has been accused of incitement to commit a crime for calling on EFF supporters to invade unoccupied land in 2016 in Newcastle.

Malema, who has already been charged twice under the Riotous Assemblies Act, is being charged under common law.

He is currently challenging the constitutionality of the Riotous Assemblies Act.

 

DA files papers to have Zuma's appeal against corruption charges dismissed

The DA has filed papers asking the Supreme Court of Appeal to dismiss President Jacob Zuma and the National Prosecuting Authority's requests for leave to appeal a High Court ruling that Zuma's corruption charges be reinstated.

Zuma and the NPA are appealing the North Gauteng High Court's April 2016 ruling that the 783 outstanding charges against him for alleged corruption must be reinstated.

DA federal executive chairperson James Selfe said the party yesterday filed its heads of argument, asserting that "both Zuma and the NPA's requests were void of any merit and should be dismissed with costs.
