Expropriation debate moves to Free State and Mpumalanga

The Constitutional Review Committee will now set its sights on the Free State and Mpumalanga for public hearings on a possible amendment of section 25 of the Constitution to allow expropriation without compensation.

Today the committee's delegation in the Free State will have its hearing in the Samson Sefuthi Community Hall in Botshabelo, and the delegation in Mpumalanga in the AG Community Hall in Mbombela.

The public hearings are part of the committee's process of ascertaining whether a review of section 25 of the Constitution and other clauses are necessary, to make it possible for the state to expropriate land in the public interest without compensation, and propose the necessary constitutional amendments where necessary.

 

Judge President Hlophe to appear before Judicial Conduct Tribunal

Judge President of the Western Cape High Court John Hlophe will today face a Judicial Conduct Tribunal for allegedly attempting to influence Constitutional Court judges in a case involving former president Jacob Zuma.
 

City Press reported that should Hlophe be found guilty, he will be at risk of becoming the first judge in the democratic of SA to be impeached.

The alleged incident is traced back to a complaint laid by the full Constitutional Court Bench, which alleges that Hlophe approached Justice Bess Nkabinde and Justice Christopher Jafta and attempted to improperly influence them in a matter before the court involving Zuma.

 

Freedom Under Law to take Shaun Abrahams to court over Jiba's NPA 'office visits'

Freedom Under Law is preparing to take National Prosecuting Authority head Shaun Abrahams to court, claiming Abrahams and his deputy Nomgcobo Jiba are in contempt of court.

In a statement yesterday, non-profit organisation FUL contends Abrahams was aware that his deputy Jiba was visiting its Pretoria office, despite being placed on special leave.

Last month, FUL instructed their lawyers to write to Abrahams to explain why Jiba was spotted entering the NPA premises in Pretoria twice in the past six months, despite being placed on special leave.
