President Jacob Zuma's son Edward has read former Public Protector Thuli Madonsela the riot act, saying she "should either become a full-time politician or just shut up".

This comes after Madonsela's comments on her preferred candidate to succeed his father had riled the president's eldest son.

Madonsela went on to say that South Africa deserved a good president.

The DA yesterday responded to criticism from the Palestinian embassy in South Africa over DA leader Mmusi Maimane’s visit to the region by releasing a paper trail of exchanges with the Palestinian Authority presidency, and denying claims that he had been shunned by local officials.

DA spokesperson Phumzile van Damme said the party had dealt directly with the office of President Mahmoud Abbas in setting up a meeting between him and Maimane.

According to the DA, the meeting was cancelled because of a scheduling conflict on Mahmoud’s side and Van Damme said the party was not aware of any directive to Palestinian officials not to meet with Maimane.

 

The United Nations human rights office and the UN Mission in South Sudan have released a report on human rights violations in South Sudan, urging the need for accountability and justice.

A report said hundreds of people were killed in South Sudan during an outbreak of violence last July, and more than two-hundred people were raped, during the fighting that broke out between the Sudan People’s Liberation Army and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement/Army in Opposition.

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein said the belligerents blatantly ignored international human rights law and humanitarian law.
