Inquiry hears that no one was willing to sign Breytenbach's suspension letter

The Mokgoro inquiry has heard that initially no one had wanted to sign former State prosecutor Glynnis Breytenbach’s suspension letter.

This was according to former National Prosecuting Authority CEO Karen van Rensburg who testified at the inquiry which has been tasked with establishing whether suspended deputy prosecutions boss Nomgcobo Jiba and suspended special director of public prosecutions Lawrence Mrwebi are fit for office.

During her testimony on Tuesday, Breytenbach maintained that her suspension was to block the prosecution of Crime Intelligence boss Richard Mdluli and that Mrwebi and Jiba played an integral part in protecting him.

 

Mahumapelo shares his views on '9 lost years' comments

Former President Jacob Zuma's staunch ally, Supra Mahumapelo, has pleaded with the ANC leaders – those for and against Zuma – to stop debating his legacy in public.

Mahumapelo expressed his views just a day after Zuma took to Twitter to defend his nine years in office as head of State.

Mahumapelo spoke to journalists during a lunch adjournment at the Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg where he and others are challenging the party's decision to disband the North West provincial executive committee.

Mahumapelo blamed some of the country's challenges on colonialism and apartheid, and acknowledged that there was no way of perfecting leadership.

 

UK Minister for Africa in SA for bilateral talks

The UK Minister of State for Africa Harriett Baldwin will arrive in Johannesburg today for a two-day visit to South Africa.

Baldwin is set to hold talks with senior South African government officials, the business sector and civil society to discuss the UK-SA bilateral relationship, regional African issues, as well as trade and investment.

South Africa is closely monitoring the Brexit developments in the UK and the impact of these on trade and investment as the UK tries to negotiate a deal to leave the European Union.
