DA blames national government for exacerbating water shortages

The DA again blamed partly the national government for the water crisis in the drought-stricken Western and Eastern Cape, saying it had "failed" to repair and maintain aged water infrastructure, or ensure that there were adequate water supplies.

Following an oversight visit to the Nooitgedacht Low Level Water Scheme in Port Elizabeth yesterday, the DA's Leon Basson said residents were confronted with a rapidly dwindling water supply due to the drought and urged Water and Sanitation Minister Nomvula Mokonyane to intervene.

He said the Minister must now urgently ensure the availability of water as per the Constitutional mandate of her department.

Beneficiaries need details about new Sassa process and accounts

Nongovernment Organisation Black Sash has pleaded with the inter-ministerial committee responsible for handling the social grants crisis to release more details about banking requirements under the new scheme.

The South African Social Security Agency released its fourth report to the Constitutional Court on January 8 on the proposed hybrid model to pay grants from April.

This after the inter-ministerial committee announced in December that the South African Post Office would handle core functions of the new system, while commercial banks would play an increased role.

However, with just two months to go, the report raises more questions than answers, Black Sash contends.

MPs to continue debate on process to impeach president

Parliament's sub-committee on the rules of the National Assembly will meet today to finalise issues around the process of impeaching a president.

The sub-committee met on Thursday last week to discuss the proposal of a "hybrid panel" of MPs, retired judges and legal minds that would handle the in-depth processes of impeaching a president.

The new process is likely to be used against President Jacob Zuma, should he not heed calls to resign.
