Heads of State and government to elect new AU Commission chair

And, Ramaphosa on the campaign trail in George

Cape Town mayor Patricia de Lille has resigned from her dual role as leader of the DA in the Western Cape, the party confirmed today.

De Lille had been mayor since 2011 and said she wanted to focus on this role. Her resignation takes effect on February 1.

Heads of State and government will today elect a new AU Commission Chairperson to replace South Africa’s Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma – widely credited with improved efficiencies and women’s empowerment at the august body.

Six months ago Dlamini-Zuma, who declined a second four-year term, had her tenure extended in Kigali, Rwanda, after elections to replace her were inconclusive.

The ANC deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa will hit the election campaign trail again today, this time for by-elections to be held in George, the party said.

Ramaphosa planned to start early with a walkabout and a meeting in Uniondale, then a spot of canvassing in Ward 11, Thembalethu, said Western Cape head of organising Richard Dyantyi.

A by-election in Ward 25 would also be held after the death of ANC councillor Marlin Du Preez.
