President Jacob Zuma is still considering issues around a request to establish a commission of inquiry into the affairs of South African Airways, the Presidency said today. 

Presidency spokesperson Bongani Ngqulunga said Zuma had received a letter from the ANC Women's League calling for the establishment of a commission of inquiry into SAA.

Andile Mngxitama's Black First Land First had also made the same request.

Among the claims made by the ANC Women’s League was that SAA spent more than R10-billion per annum on jet fuel.

 

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate conducted a search and seizure raid yesterday on the private residence of Acting National Police Commissioner Khomotso Phahlane.

A news agency learnt that the police watchdog obtained a search warrant from a senior judge in the Pretoria High Court to seize R80 000 worth of electronic sound system equipment as part of a corruption and defeating the ends of justice investigation into Phahlane.

IPID spokesperson Moses Dlamini confirmed that one of their investigators had received death threats related to the probe

Eskom has been asked to give municipalities with outstanding bills until the end of the month to settle their accounts before switching off the lights, Minister of Public Enterprises Lynne Brown said yesterday.

She said turning off the power supply did not only impact on individual ratepayers and municipalities, it had potentially disastrous effects on businesses, and therefore jobs.

Minister Brown urged municipalities who are in debt to clear their accounts as soon as possible.
