Making headlines:

Zuma says ANC is not bound to elect deputy as leader

De Lille to announce new mayoral committee for Cape Town

And, Duarte says ANC will work towards unity

The ANC is not bound by tradition to elect its deputy as leader, President Jacob Zuma said yesterday, dismissing labour unions' endorsement of Cyril Ramaphosa.

The ANC, which last year suffered its worst election result since the end of white-minority rule in 1994, is set to choose a successor to the scandal-plagued Zuma by the end of this year.

Ramaphosa and Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, the AU president once married to Zuma, had both been tapped by organisations in the governing alliance to become party leader, but neither had yet declared whether they intend to stand.

Mayor of Cape Town Patricia de Lille is expected to announce the new Members of the Mayoral Committee today.

The committee is made up of the political heads of specific portfolios.

They will be introduced after the council adopts the Organisational Development and Transformation Plan which aims to streamline government to be more ''customer-centric''.

The ANC Deputy Secretary General Jessie Duarte says the party will work hard for unity.

She was speaking at the Mahikeng Civic Centre yesterday as part of the ANCs 10th anniversary regional celebrations.

Based on tweets from those at the Mhaikeng event, Duarte’s speech touched on ANC members attempting to ensure the country was presented with a united set of leaders.

Also making headlines:

The ANC’s provincial chair and acting KwaZulu-Natal Premier Sihle Zikalala said new 'use it or lose it' land policy in the pipeline.

And, Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa said ANC leaders were divided and causing destruction.
