Zuma survives first Ramaphosa NEC meeting

President Jacob Zuma will remain at the helm of the country after the national executive committee of the ANC did not deliberate on his future at its meeting in East London yesterday.

At least two NEC members told News24 that Zuma's fate was not discussed during the short special NEC meeting ahead of the party's birthday celebrations on Saturday dismissing the rife speculation that they were going to push for the body to recall Zuma.

The sources told News24 the issue was not raised with members, who instead focused on the contents of the January 8 statement to be delivered by ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa on behalf of the NEC at the party's celebrations to take place at the Buffalo City Stadium.

 

Mkhwebane differs with Madonsela on terms of reference

Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane shared a different view than her predecessor Thuli Madonsela on the terms of reference of the judicial commission of inquiry into State capture.

She welcomed President Jacob Zuma's appointment of a judicial commission of inquiry and offered her services to help develop the terms of reference of the inquiry following Madonsela's State of Capture report released in October 2016.

Madonsela told News24 earlier yesterday that the inquiry to be headed by Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo may only focus on State capture allegedly committed by the Zuma and Gupta families whereas Mkhwebane is calling for a wider probe into State capture.

 

EFF wants retired judges for impeachment committee

An impeachment committee consisting of retired judges is one of the ideas mooted yesterday when the National Assembly subcommittee on the review of rules started deliberations on a draft procedure to remove the president in terms of section 89 of the Constitution.

EFF MP Mbuyiseni Ndlozi raised the idea, saying that such a panel could consist of five retired judges adding that this would help avoid the possibility of an impeachment motion "being blocked by the politics of majoritarianism".

His proposal received support from ANC MP Nyami Booi who said the constitutional judges found that Parliament's committee system wasn't strong enough for impeachment procedures and suggested that capacity is built "around what Dr Ndlozi was offering".
