DRC opposition candidate provisionally declared winner of presidential vote

Democratic Republic of Congo opposition candidate Felix Tshisekedi has been declared by election officials as the provisional winner of a contentious December 30 presidential poll. 

News agency AFP quoted Corneille Nangaa, the head of the Independent National Election Commission saying that Felix Tshisekedi was provisionally declared the elected president of the Democratic Republic of Congo after acquiring 38.57% of the vote.

Tshisekedi beat off candidates including Emmanuel Ramazani Shadary, handpicked by incumbent President Joseph Kabila as his preferred successor.

The elections had been long delayed as Kabila repeatedly refused to step down after 18-years in power and despite his official term ending in 2016 after his two-term constitutional limit was up.

The Democratic Alliance says it will consult its lawyers following what it calls an "infringement" by the African National Congress for using the slogan "One South Africa for all" during its 107th birthday celebrations.

 

DA challenges ANC over slogan

The DA alleges that the ANC had "stolen" its election slogan, which the Mmusi Maimane-led organisation launched in April 2018.

DA national spokesperson Solly Malatsi said the party had chosen the slogan because they were "the only party that is still committed to achieving non-racial ideals in South Africa".

ANC national acting spokesperson Zizi Kodwa said the DA was "insignificant" at this stage, as the governing party was focusing on its upcoming manifesto launch.

 

Second member resigns from Ramaphosa's Eskom Task team

A second member of President Cyril Ramaphosa's task team on Eskom has stepped down, the Presidency spokesperson Khusela Diko has confirmed.

Diko said Sy Gourrah of Actom had asked to leave the task team in December to avoid a potential conflict of interest, as the company she works for has dealings with Eskom.

Last year former Eskom CEO Brian Dames also stepped down over a "perceived conflict of interest relating to the scope of work and terms of reference of the Eskom Sustainability Task Team".
