Parliament to review rules on removing President

South Africa’s parliament said yesterday it would review its rules relating to removing the country's president, after the constitutional court ruled on December 29 that lawmakers had previously failed to hold President Jacob Zuma to account.

The National Assembly said a parliamentary subcommittee will meet this week to discuss a draft procedure on the section of the constitution relating to the removal of a president and the draft will then be debated in the house.

Zuma has survived several no confidence votes in parliament over recent years, mostly relating to a string of corruption allegations.

 

NYDA calls free education announcement a victory for students

The National Youth Development Agency has congratulated the class of 2017 for their "phenomenal performance" and encouraged them to apply to study at tertiary institutions.

NYDA spokesperson Lerato Gambu said they continued to be encouraged that the national pass rate was increasing and they continued to experience excellence in unusual corners of the country.

Gambu said the agency had taken note of President Jacob Zuma’s announcement last year that tertiary education would be provided free for 90% of the country’s households.

 

Zim soldiers were promised money and gold to oust Mugabe

Robert Mugabe’s nephew has claimed that Zimbabwean soldiers were told they could keep any cash, gold or diamonds they found during the military takeover in November.

Patrick Zhuwao, writing in an editorial on the private NewZimbabwe website, said after the riches failed to materialise the soldiers had become part of a growing resistance movement, which he dubbed #2018Resistance, loyal to the ousted president.

Zhuwao said the military personnel that engaged in the illegal, unconstitutional and treasonous Operation Restore Legacy were authorised to keep whatever money, gold and diamonds that they came across.
