High Court expected to hear Mpumalanga ANC 'unity' vote matter

An urgent court application by ANC presidential hopeful Mathews Phosa to stop Mpumalanga branches that nominated "unity" for the ANC's top six positions from attending the party's national elective conference is expected to be heard in the high court in Johannesburg on Tuesday.

The applicants have taken the ANC at Luthuli House, Mpumalanga ANC and provincial chair David Mabuza to court ahead of the upcoming elective conference, which takes place between December 16 and 20 in Gauteng.

The applicants want the meetings of the branches that nominated "unity" to be declared "null and void, unlawful and unconstitutional".

 

Saftu slams Abrahams' extention of Zuma's deadline

The South African Federation of Trade Unions yesterday slammed the decision of the National Director of Public Prosecutions Shaun Abrahams to extend President Jacob Zuma's deadline to submit his new representations to the National Prosecuting Authority.

Saftu acting spokesperson Patrick Craven said they were not aware of any case where someone facing 783 [counts] of corruption, fraud, money laundering and racketeering had been given three months to make representations.

Meanwhile, NPA spokesperson Luvuyo Mfaku told News24 that the president's legal representatives had written to Abrahams, requesting an extension until February 19, which Abrahams had refused.

 

Archbishop Makgoba urges ANC ‘to put partisan interests aside’

Archbishop Thabo Makgoba of Cape Town has urged all ANC branch representatives to use the forthcoming conference to “put all factional, partisan interests aside, follow their consciences and be the architects of a flourishing South Africa”.

He made the appeal ahead of the ANC’s 54th National Conference, which starts on Saturday and ends on Wednesday.

A new party leader is expected to be elected to replace President Jacob Zuma.
