Western Cape legislature to debate Zille impeachment

A debate on whether or not Western Cape Premier Helen Zille should be impeached is expected to be held at the provincial legislature today.

The ANC brought the notion to the legislature on Monday and would have to prove the premier was guilty of serious misconduct; violation of the constitution or the law or unable to perform the functions of her office.

Western Cape ANC chairperson Marius Fransman said the ruling party believed there were legal grounds to have Zille democratically removed as premier.

In her government newsletter published on Monday, Zille said the debate would turn out to be nothing but "ANC grandstanding".

 

The South African National Civic Organisation in the North West called the ruling by ConCourt that by-elections in Tlokwe were not free and fair, “an embarrassment that has compromised the credibility of the electoral system”.

This comes after the ConCourt set aside the results of the controversial by-elections in several wards in Tlokwe, finding that they were not free and fair.

It set aside the by-elections conducted on September 12, 2013, in ward 18 and on December 10, 2013 in wards one, four, 11, 12, 13 and 20.

Sanco called for the disbandment of the ANC provincial leadership and said immediate action should be taken against those responsible for the ‘scandalous vote rigging’.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas shook hands Monday at the global climate conference in Paris, their first meeting in five years.

The handshake occurred after two months of the worst street violence in Israel and the Palestinian territories and the collapse of the peace process 18 months ago.

Netanyahu and Abbas were made to stand near each other during a joint portrait of world leaders at the summit.

And, the IEC was ready to hold new by-elections in Tlokwe following the Constitutional Court's decision to set aside the results in several wards.
