Load-shedding to resume and continue overnight

After instituting rotational power cuts overnight, Eskom announced today that stage 2 load-shedding would again start at 09:00 and continue until 06:00 on Saturday morning. 

Stage 2 load-shedding allows for up to 2 000 MW to be cut from the national grid.

The utility said that unplanned breakdowns were still above 12 500 MW, about a quarter of its nominal generating capacity.

It said its technical teams had been unable to return units to service from planned maintenance or unplanned outages.

 

Industry body says air transport is a key industry and SAA has a big impact

The Airlines Association of Southern Africa says President Cyril Ramaphosa's decision to have South African Airways placed under immediate business rescue should provide some security and clarity for South Africa's air transport, trade, logistics, travel and tourism sectors.

AASA would like the business rescue scenario to give the aviation and related industries a chance to adjust and adapt - ensuring that those they serve are provided with sustainable, competitive, capable, reliable and safe services.

AASA's members include all of the domestic airlines in South Africa, and most airlines in the Southern African Development Community region and the Indian Ocean islands.

 

And, Herman Mashaba launches platform for social change

Former Johannesburg mayor and Democratic Alliance (DA) member Herman Mashaba has announced the launch of a new platform "to engage South Africans from all walks of life about how we can build a South Africa that we can all be proud of".

In a statement on Friday, Mashaba said he made this decision to launch The People's Dialogue, after he resigned from the DA and gave up his seat as mayor.

Mashaba said like many South Africans, he has lost faith in the country’s political system.

According to Mashaba, while South Africa faces many challenges as a nation, he believes that South Africans were capable of finding innovative solutions to these, driven by the countless talented individuals who share his desire to save the country.
