Mashaba, Da Gama survive motion of no confidence

Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba and Speaker of Council, Vasco da Gama survived a motion of no confidence against them yesterday.

The motions of no confidence was brought by the ANC.

In a statement last night, Mashaba said they welcomed the opportunity to defend their record in "cleaning up the corrupt mess left behind by ANC".

Mashaba, became Mayor of Johannesburg in August last year following a coalition agreement between smaller parties to oust the ANC from power after the Local Government Elections.

Dlamini-Zuma wins global political leader lifetime achievement award

ANC presidential candidate Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma has been honoured with a lifetime achievement award at the Women Political Leaders Global Forum.

Dlamini-Zuma, who is currently locked in a race to succeed President Jacob Zuma as ANC president, received the acknowledgement for her work as African Union Commission chairperson from 2012 to 2017.

The award was given during a summit held by the WPL, a global network of female politicians, from Tuesday to Thursday in Iceland.

Dlamini-Zuma thanked the World Political Leaders Global Forum, saying the award  inspired her immensely and she promised to continue to work harder to push down barriers to women's emancipation and empowerment.

The mission of the WPL is to increase both the number and the influence of women in political leadership positions, the organisation said in a statement yesterday.

And, NPA silent on Zuma representations as 'special' team considers corruption charges

The National Prosecuting Authority could not confirm yesterday afternoon whether President Jacob Zuma provided reasons for why he should not be prosecuted for corruption.

Zuma faces prosecution for 783 counts of corruption.

A team of prosecutors has been appointed by NPA head Shaun Abrahams to consider the case against Zuma.

NPA spokesperson Luvuyo Mfaku said the "special" team has yet to meet to discuss the president's charges.

Zuma's spokesperson Bongani Ngqulunga could not be reached for comment.
