Britain supports South African land reform, says Theresa May

Britain supports South Africa's land reform programme provided it is carried out legally, Prime Minister Theresa May said in Cape Town on Tuesday, adding that she would discuss the issue with President Cyril Ramaphosa.

She said the UK has, for some time, supported land reform that is legal, transparent and generated through a democratic process.

She said she had raised the issue with Ramaphosa when he was in London earlier this year.

 

'Athol Trollip still mayor of Nelson Mandela Bay', says Eastern Cape DA

DA Eastern Cape leader Nqaba Bhanga insisted yesterday that Athol Trollip was still executive mayor of the Province.

He spoke after a council meeting of the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality where Trollip's nemesis from the United Democratic Movement, Mongameli Bobani, was voted in to replace him.

According to Bhanga, there was no meeting, as Municipal Manager Johann Mettler adjourned the meeting earlier.

Yesterday also saw the DA coalition's speaker Jonathan Lawack being removed after a motion of no confidence was brought against him succeeded with one vote, after DA councillor Victor Manyati abstained.

Shortly after this motion, during a break, the DA presented a letter to Mettler, stating that Manyati had been kicked out of the party.

 

Zuma and the Guptas and others could be forced to testify
 

President Jacob Zuma, his son Duduzane, the infamous Gupta family and others implicated in the State capture inquiry, could be forced to testify if the legal team at the inquiry has its way.

However, chairperson of the commission of inquiry Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo will reveal all today after he hears full argument on the issue and makes a ruling.

At the inquiry yesterday, the legal team asked Zondo to force those who want to cross-examine witnesses who implicated them to also testify in person and to be subjected to cross-examination.
