Incoming Ekurhuleni mayor Mzwandile Masina does not plan to get rid of municipal staff who served under his predecessor Mondli Gungubele.

Masina told a news agency he would not purge people.

He said the municipality was going to work with staff to make sure they delivered what the communities expected.

While he did not want to admit to feeling some pressure in manning the only ANC-led metro in Gauteng, he welcomed the chance to improve people’s lives.

 

The country’s universities cannot handle another 0% fee increase and it will break down decades of hard work, outgoing University of the Free State vice chancellor Jonathan Jansen has said.

Jansen was speaking publicly during a lecture at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology in Bellville where he said a bad few months could bring down a century of good work at an institution.

Parliament's portfolio committee on higher education heard on Wednesday that 19 universities could become dysfunctional by 2018 if a 0% fee increase was carried over for a second year.

Zimbabwe’s home affairs minister Ignatius Chombo says the government won’t tolerate any attempt to undermine peace in an apparent threat against a huge march by opposition parties today.

He said they would not tolerate any attempts by any group of persons, political parties, civic organisations or individuals whose actions will undermine the peace and quiet that Zimbabwe enjoys today.

Harare's High Court today will hear an application for the march - which was calling for electoral reform - to be allowed to go ahead after police said they discouraged it.
