Ramaphosa to face questions about Guptas and unemployment

Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to answer questions about the Gupta family’s influence at Eskom, confidence in state-owned enterprises, and unemployment, in the National Assembly today.

The question session is scheduled to start at 15:00.

ANC MP Ndabakayise Gcwabaza will ask him how investor confidence in the SOEs can be maintained and what steps government has taken to stabilise them to advance economic transformation and growth.

Agang SA MP Andries Tlouamma will ask Ramaphosa how long he had known about "a certain family’s alleged influence" at Eskom and what he has done to stop it.

DA leader Mmusi Maimane will ask him if he offered National Assembly Speaker Baleka Mbete "his considered views" on whether to allow the motion of no confidence in President Jacob Zuma on August 8 to be conducted by secret ballot.

Angola to elect new president as dos Santos retires

Angola goes to the polls today in a historic election marking the end of President Jose Eduardo dos Santos' 38-year reign, with his party set to retain power despite the country's economic crisis.

The People's Movement for the Liberation of Angola, which has ruled the country since its 1975 independence from Portugal, is expected to defeat opposition parties that struggle under a repressive regime.

Dos Santos's retirement - reportedly prompted by ill health - has triggered the biggest political transition in decades for Angola, a leading oil-exporter in Africa.

However, his chosen successor, Defence Minister Joao Lourenco, is a loyalist who is predicted to avoid immediate change in a government often criticised for corruption and failure to tackle dire poverty.

And, ANC Women’s League says Dlamini-Zuma chased out of Marikana because of 'unresolved issues'

The ANC Women’s League says its presidential candidate Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma was chased out of Marikana because of "unresolved" issues between the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union and government.

Dlamini-Zuma had planned to lay a wreath on the koppie where 34 striking miners were shot dead by police in 2012.

However, she had to leave without even stepping out of her blue lights vehicle. She was only in the area for a few minutes.

Scores of women in league regalia had gathered on the open space at the foot of the koppie to welcome and accompany Dlamini-Zuma.

However, a handful of men wearing trade union Amcu T-shirts were standing guard.
