Chris Hani's killer Janusz Walus expected to apply for parole in Gauteng High Court

Chris Hani's killer Janusz Walus is expected to return to the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria on Tuesday morning to once again apply for parole.

On November 17 last year, Justice Minister Michael Masutha said Walus had not shown enough remorse for killing the SACP leader in the driveway of his Boksburg home on April 10, 1993.

Giving reasons for his refusal to grant Walus parole, Masutha said paroling the convicted murderer would not be fitting, as he "still harbours resentment".

This followed a Supreme Court of Appeal ruling in August which gave the minister 90 days to make a decision.

Masutha said a psychologist's report had highlighted Walus' political ideology as a "risk factor".

 

Chamisa assembles legal team to challenge Zim poll result

MDC-Alliance presidential candidate Nelson Chamisa, who insists that Zimbabwe's presidential election results were flawed, yesterday appointed a team of legal practitioners in his quest to overturn Zimbabwe Electoral Commission chairperson Justice Priscilla Chigumba’s declared result.

MDC-Alliance spokesperson Nkululeko Sibanda told a media briefing in Harare that Chamisa intended to challenge the announced results.

Sibanda said they do not intend to challenge the presidential results as they know that president Chamisa won.

He said they seek to overturn the announced results so that the people of Zimbabwe can get the president they voted for. Chamisa is the president-elect and Emmerson Mnangagwa is the president-declared, he said. Mnangagwa was declared the winner by the electoral management body against the will of the people, he maintained.

 

And, Motshekga says it's an insult to call Mandela a sell-out

Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga yesterday said that it was an “insult” to call late anti-apartheid struggle icon and former President Nelson Mandela a sellout. 

In a lecture to commemorate the centenary of Mandela and Mama Albertina Sisulu, Motshekga addressed hundreds of pupils, teachers and parents from high schools in Elliotdale in the Eastern Cape.

She stated that Madiba had 27 years in prison to sell out. He could have sold out to be set free. What could have made him sell out in the 27th year when he endured imprisonment for 26 years?

Motshekga said Mandela was focused on the struggle for liberation. 

She also described Sisulu as a freedom fighter who never blew her own trumpet.
