Shoot to kill was the order given to police by the Minister of Police Fikile Mbalula yesterday.

Mbalula said when dealing with criminals, police should do all they can to protect themselves and the country.

He urged police to not allow themselves to be killed while criminals are ruthless against them. He added that the law protects police who fight back."

He urged citizens to report criminals.

 

The US slammed South Sudan's President Salva Kiir yesterday for the African state's "man-made" famine and ongoing conflict, urging him to fulfill a month-old pledge of a unilateral truce by ordering his troops back to their barracks.

South Sudan descended into civil war in 2013 after Kiir fired his deputy, unleashing a conflict that has spawned armed factions often following ethnic lines.

 

The Maluti-A-Phofung special economic zone is the first to be developed in an area that was once part of the Bantustan industrial parks, President Jacob Zuma said yesterday.

These parks were created not because of their economic potential, but to sustain apartheid, he said at the unveiling of the new zone in Harrismith, Free State.

A balanced regional economy and industrial development were critical to radical economic transformation, he said.
