Ramaphosa given 24 hours to fire Supra Mahumapelo

Disgruntled ANC members calling for North West Premier Supra Mahumapelo to step down, have given President Cyril Ramaphosa an ultimatum - either fire him or face a total shutdown of the already troubled province.

Ramaphosa has been given until today to act.

The Revolutionary Council, which embarked on a campaign to oust Mahumapelo in January, has slammed Ramaphosa for failing to urgently end the crisis in the province, which has already led to the death of a 16-year-old boy during violent protests and brought schooling and health services to a halt.

Saftu slams strike violence claims as a hoax

The South African Federation of Trade Unions rubbished claims that its planned "national shutdown" today will be violent.

Saftu spokesperson Patrick Craven said they don't think people are genuinely worried.

Craven urged everybody to ignore the messages that were sent out on social media and added that the marches will be peaceful, well marshalled and disciplined, as they always are and people have actually no reason to fear.

DA caucus to debate De Lille's future

The DA's Cape Town caucus is expected to debate an internal motion of no confidence in embattled Cape Town Mayor Patricia de Lille today.

The one-and-a-half-year saga between De Lille and her party will finally come to a head today when DA councillors convene for the next step in the party's new "recall clause" process.

They will caucus after the City of Cape Town council concludes its business for the day, to debate, discuss and ultimately vote on the future of the former Independent Democrats leader.

Also making headlines:

Embattled North West Premier Supra Mahumapelo could be summoned to a home affairs portfolio committee inquiry into the Guptas' naturalisation if some ANC MPs have their way.
