Save South Africa has criticised President Jacob Zuma’s statements yesterday that marches against him on Friday were racist.

Save SA said they had observed in the recent period that the president had, out of desperation, been demonstrating an inclination to invoke the race card in a divisive manner.

While addressing crowds at the commemoration of the assassination of Chris Hani yesterday, Zuma said posters at last week's marches displayed beliefs he thought had died in 1994.

 

The Ahmed Kathrada Foundation said it was concerned by the KwaZulu-Natal African National Congress Youth League’s display of intolerance at a memorial service held for anti-apartheid struggle veteran Ahmed Kathrada in Durban on Sunday.

Former finance minister Pravin Gordhan and ANC Treasurer General Zweli Mkhize were booed and heckled when they tried to speak at the memorial.

Foundation’s Executive Director, Neeshan Bolton said that the KZN youth league’s conduct was disrespectful to the memory of Kathrada.

 

The United Democratic Movement wants the Constitutional Court to force Parliament to use a secret ballot for the protection of ANC members when MPs vote in a motion of no confidence against President Jacob Zuma next Tuesday.

The motion, which had seen opposition parties unite, is due to be debated in Parliament on Tuesday, April 18.

It follows Zuma's decision to reshuffle his Cabinet last week when he fired five ministers including former finance minister Pravin Gordhan and his deputy Mcebisi Jonas.
