The Congress of South African Trade Unions will today embark on a one day protest against e-tolls and other issues affecting workers.

The Cosatu protest, which coincides with ‘International Decent Work Day’, will also press for free education.

Cosatu, which says it has more than two million members, is demanding the scrapping of the e-tolling system and the urgent implementation of safe, reliable, integrated and affordable transport.

President Jacob Zuma wants the investigation into allegations of state capture deferred to the incoming Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane.

In a statement following her meeting with Zuma on Thursday, outgoing Public Protector Thuli Madonsela said Zuma and his legal team spent the bulk of their four-hour meeting arguing that the investigation be deferred to Mkhwebane on the grounds that there "wasn't enough time to conclude the matter properly and that there was no reason for the investigation to be prioritised".

Madonsela said that while the meeting was "cordial", she was also told that Zuma had not had time to prepare answers with legal advice, given the investigation timelines.
She said this was despite the acknowledgment that she had advised him in writing on March 22 about the allegations against him as well as his suspected breach of the Executive Ethics Code.

Madonsela leaves office this month. Zuma appointed Mkhwebane as the new public protector for a seven year term effective from October 15.

The African National Congress Youth League wants government to follow the timeline for the implementation of free education, which the ANC set down at its Mangaung conference.

At its 53rd national conference in Mangaung in December 2012, the ANC resolved to start implementation of free higher education by the end of 2013.

Youth League president Collen Maine said he disagreed with ANC secretary general Gwede Mantashe’s statement that the ANC had more than exceeded the goals for education contained in the Freedom Charter.

While the ANC youth league said it agreed with the students’ demands, it denounced the violence and destruction of property seen on campuses.
