Wits to resume lectures this week

The University of Witwatersrand is expected to resume academic activities after weeks of protests.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Wits University said academic activities would resume on Tuesday and all staff members were expected back at work on Monday.

Patel said the university would bring additional security on campus.

Last Thursday, the university conducted a poll asking students and staff if they wanted to continue with classes on Monday.

 

Higher Education and Training Minister Blade Nzimande is expected to convene a multi-stakeholder forum consultative meeting at Emperors Palace in Kempton Park today.

The aim of the meeting is to seek a solution to the situation in higher education and resume the 2016 academic programme.

On Saturday, Nzimande said the ministers in the higher education and justice cluster had met with student leaders for more than three hours in Kempton Park, east of Johannesburg, to discuss violent protests which have been taking place at several institutions of higher learning across the country.

Students and police have clashed a number of times, with the latter using stun grenades and rubber bullets to disperse protesting students.

President Jacob Zuma was also expected to officially open the Higher Education Stakeholder Summit at Emperors Palace on Monday.

Various sectors will be brought together including business, labour, religious leaders, students, parents and university management.

 

The Democratic Alliance and Congress of the People are expected to protest at the SABC’s Auckland Park headquarters against former chief operating officer Hlaudi Motsoeneng today.

DA leader Mmusi Maimane and Cope leader Mosiuoa Lekota are expected to lead their members to the public broadcaster.

During a media conference last Tuesday, it was announced that Motsoeneng would go back to his former job as Group Executive of Corporate Affairs.

Last month, the Supreme Court of Appeal rejected Motsoeneng's bid for leave to appeal against a November 2015 Western Cape High Court ruling declaring his appointment as COO irrational, and setting it aside.
