Parliament will again debate a motion of no confidence in President Jacob Zuma, the Democratic Alliance has said.

One day after the release of the long-awaited report on “State capture”, DA leader Mmusi Maimane said the party’s motion would be debated on Thursday, November 10.

This was a provisional date, he said.

The party would be launching a public campaign to build support for the motion. This would include lobbying all MPs, including the African National Congress, Maimane said.

He said they could not wait for the inquiry process to be complete to get rid of Zuma.

 

The fees commission handed its interim report to President Jacob Zuma yesterday.

Zuma would study the report, compiled by the Commission of Inquiry into Higher Education and Training, and give direction on the way forward, the Presidency said in a statement.

Cosatu yesterday announced it planned to hold a national strike to demand free education.

Commission chair Judge Jonathan Heher submitted the interim report to Zuma, after only three of the proposed eight sets into which the commission had divided its work had been completed. The commission is looking into the feasibility of fee-free higher education in South Africa.

 

Cabinet has moved to draw a line under the botched handling of fraud charges against Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan.

In a post-Cabinet statement yesterday, following a two-day special meeting in Parliament, members of the executive said the country should now focus on the ailing economy.

"The decision by the National Prosecuting Authority to withdraw fraud charges against Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan brings the matter to finality and allows the country to direct all efforts to advance the economy, build investor confidence and avert an international credit rating downgrade."

NPA head Advocate Shaun Abrahams announced on Monday he would be withdrawing fraud charges against Gordhan, which stemmed from Gordhan’s time as South African Revenue Service commissioner; former Sars commissioner Oupa Magashula and former Sars deputy commissioner Ivan Pillay, saying he was satisfied they did not act unlawfully.
