UCT to start exams on November 7
State withdraws charges against McBride

The University of Cape Town yesterday released a timetable for the exams and the academic calendar for 2017, following weeks of disruption during protests over fee-free tertiary education.

Examinations would start on November 7, but students could defer individual exams or their full block of exams to January 2017, UCT said.

Classes would commence on March 13, 2017. Some faculties would run a mini-semester from January 3 to 20.

 

The State has withdrawn charges against Independent Police Investigative Directorate head Robert McBride and his two co-accused.

McBride, former director of investigations Matthew Sesoko, and former head of Ipid in Limpopo Innocent Khuba were being investigated by the Hawks' Crimes Against the State unit for fraud and defeating the ends of justice.

The charges against the trio relate to their investigation of former Hawks head Lieutenant General Anwa Dramat.

Dramat was accused of involvement in the illegal rendition of Zimbabwean nationals in 2010.

 

The Economic Freedom Fighter's lawyer is proof of the benefits of education, party leader Julius Malema said yesterday.

He was referring to advocate Tembeka Ngcukaitobi, who argued for the party's application to oppose President Jacob Zuma’s bid to interdict the release of former public protector Thuli Madonsela’s “state capture” report.

A full bench of the court later ruled in favour of opposition parties’ intervention.
Malema referred to Co-operative Governance Minister Des van Rooyen’s lawyer, Stephan du Toit, as “an old white man who doesn't say anything”.

Du Toit argued for an urgent application to interdict the release of the report. The court struck down the application
