EFF leader Julius Malema says the media unfairly project his party as violent, when the ruling ANC should instead take the mantle as a violent political party.

Malema was addressing journalists at the party’s national list conference for local government election candidates in Midrand.

Calling out the media, Malema said, the media had taken the side of the oppressor and that history will judge them harshly.

Malema said too many media reports negatively portrayed his party. He claimed the ANC was, in fact, the most violent party in the country.

eThekwini Mayor James Nxumalo was expected to table his 2016/17 budget speech at the Durban City Hall on Tuesday morning.

Municipal spokesperson Tozi Mthethwa said several hearings had been held across the city to ensure public participation regarding the R41.6-billion budget.

Mthethwa said some of the concerns raised by the public were heard during an executive committee meeting on Monday.

Some of the concerns raised by residents included housing, roads, traffic calming measures, electricity, water, safety, security and sanitation, as well as parks and recreation.

The Economic Freedom Fighters will select its candidates for the local government elections based on their work ethic, party leader Julius Malema said on Monday.

The party planned to submit its candidate list for the August 3 elections on June 2.

Malema said the party had over 3 900 branches in municipalities countrywide.

The EFF was aiming for an equal number of men and women candidates.

The party had a broad appeal among the youth, something he claimed other political parties did not have.
