DA hopeful over public protector’s Sassa investigation

The DA yesterday welcomed news that Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane will investigate the social grant saga.

MP Bridget Masango said in a statement that the DA hoped that the Public Protector's investigation would shed some light on how the crisis came about.

She said that the party wanted all those responsible to be "brought to account".

On Saturday, Mkhwebane announced that, on her "own initiative" she was planning to investigate the South African Social Security Agency.

 

The head of Rwanda's only registered opposition party, the tiny Green Party, said yesterday he will stand against President Paul Kagame, who is expected to run for third term in August presidential polls.

Kagame is widely admired by many for restoring stability to the East African nation after its 1994 genocide, presiding over rapid economic growth and creating a relatively corruption-free government.

Frank Habineza was elected to oppose Kagame in a Green Party congress of about 400 members. His platform includes investing in agriculture, increasing salaries for the security forces and ending political detentions.

 

While not directly addressing the high court ruling setting aside his appointment, embattled Hawks boss Berning Ntlemeza yesterday said he remained "unshaken".

It was Ntlemeza’s first public appearance since the High Court in Pretoria found on Friday that his appointment was unlawful.

The Helen Suzman Foundation and Freedom Under Law brought the application and asked the court to refer the appointment back to a selection panel for a new candidate to be chosen.
