Community groups intend staging a march today to the Union Buildings against crime, poverty and xenophobia.

It was organised by the Coalition of Civics Against Xenophobia, which describes itself as a coalition of South Africans and foreigners living in the country.

The move comes on the heels of violence breaking out during an anti-immigration march to the Pretoria city centre on February 24.

Police used rubber bullets, stun grenades and teargas to disperse foreigners and locals near the Department of Home Affairs building in the CBD and arrested 136 people.

 

Social Development Minister Bathabile Dlamini will again be in the spotlight when Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa answers questions in the National Assembly today.

She has faced criticism over her department’s failure to find a new service provider to pay grants to 17-million people, after the already invalid contract with Cash Paymaster Services expires on March 31.

The DA has described her as "dodging Dlamini" for her failure to adequately answer questions about the matter.

Ramaphosa will be asked about skills development, xenophobia, social cohesion, and inclusive growth.

 

Proper procedures were followed in appointing the National Youth Development Agency’s board, Minister in the Presidency Jeff Radebe said yesterday.

He had no doubts about the process, he said answering a question from EFF MP Thembinkosi Rawula in the National Assembly.

Parliament approved the appointment of the board in February, despite reservations from the EFF and DA.
