ANC Gauteng to introduce mayoral candidates
Deputy minister Nel says violent pre-election protests are illegal and  unconstitutional
And, ANC spokesperson says election lists are closed

The ANC in Gauteng will introduce its mayoral candidates today, amid ongoing protests over its selection for Tshwane.

Two people had been killed and more than 40 arrested since party members in parts of Tshwane began protesting on Monday against the choice of ANC NEC member and MP Thoko Didiza.

They wanted current mayor Kgosientso Ramokgopa to stay in the job after the local government elections.
The ANC announced its mayoral candidates for the August 3rd  local government elections after much deliberation but waited until Monday to announce Didiza.

Mayor Parks Tau would remain its candidate in Johannesburg while Deputy Trade and Industry Minister Mzwandile Masina was chosen to replace Ekurhuleni mayor Mondli Gungubele.

A clear distinction must be made between genuine protests and mere acts of public violence ahead of the upcoming local government elections, Co-operative Governance Deputy Minister Andries Nel said yesterday.

Nel said the right to assemble and to protest peacefully and unarmed was a fundamental Constitutional right that many millions of South Africans fought and sacrificed for.

He said it was a right that government would defend to the absolute maximum.

The ANC members are increasingly joining groups within the party and losing sight of the organisation, its spokesperson Zizi Kodwa said yesterday.

He said people were becoming members of members and were prepared to die for the member, and were not prepared to die for the ANC.

Kodwa was in Cape Town to introduce ANC candidate Xolani Sotashe to Dullah Omar region members in Strand.
He said candidate lists for the August 3 local government elections were closed and unhappy supporters had to accept this.
