Making headlines: ANC NEC to suspend Zuma from party; SA did actually win Israel ceasefire order, says dissenting Ugandan judge; And, Night loadshedding escalates to Stage 3 

 

ANC NEC to suspend Zuma from party

The African National Congress's highest decision-making body, the national executive committee, will move to suspend former president Jacob Zuma with immediate effect.

A late-night meeting of the NEC on Sunday saw the body agree that Zuma's membership must be suspended, and that secretary-general Fikile Mbalula must write to him informing him of the suspension.

According to NEC insiders, the initial decision was for Zuma's branch in Nkandla to suspend his membership, but it later emerged that the branch was not in good standing.

Also, the NEC opted not to expel Zuma as an ANC member as that would require longer disciplinary processes.

According to the ANC constitution's rule 25, Zuma's actions since the December announcement that he would not be campaigning or voting for the ANC, are tantamount to a breach of the constitution.

 

 

SA did actually win Israel ceasefire order, says dissenting Ugandan judge

South Africa did, in fact, win a ceasefire order against Israel, according to the International Court of Justice judge most opposed to its case. Even if the court did not say so directly.

The order granted by the overwhelming majority of the ICJ bench "in effect requires Israel to unilaterally stop hostilities with Hamas" across two different sets of measures stipulated, said Julia Sebutinde in a dissenting judgment published after the main ruling.

To comply, Israel would have to suspend its operations in Gaza even if Hamas continued to attack Israel, and regardless of whether Hamas freed the hostages it continues to hold, in Sebutinde's opinion.

South Africa had sought a direct order for such a suspension of Israel's campaign, and believes it was effectively granted through the broader language the ICJ used instead.

But Israeli officials claimed the lack of such an order as a victory, saying it reiterated Israel's right to defend itself.

 

And, Night loadshedding escalates to Stage 3 

Loadshedding will jump to Stage 3 at 4pm today after a delay in the return to service of two generating units.

Esko said over the past 24 hours, five generation units were taken offline for repairs. Additionally, the return to service of two generating units that were on planned maintenance was delayed due to an opportunity to perform preventative maintenance. These factors have contributed to the shortage of available capacity necessitating the implementation of Stage 3 loadshedding from 16:00 today until 05:00 on Tuesday.

Thereafter, loadshedding will be reduced to Stage 2 until 16:00 on Tuesday. This pattern of Stage 2 loadshedding from 05:00 until 16:00 and Stage 3 loadshedding from 16:00 until 05:00 will be repeated daily until further notice.
