Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande has described newly-elected chancellor of the University of South Africa and former president Thabo Mbeki as one of the greatest intellectuals Africa and the liberation movement have produced.

Mbeki was being inaugurated as chancellor at Unisa yesterday. He took over from Judge Bernard Ngoepe who stepped down in December after 15 years of service to the institution.

The higher education minister's praise of Mbeki was surprising to some, considering that the two have previously butted heads on a number of occasions.

 

President Robert Mugabe has reportedly poked fun at "stupid" Zimbabweans who continued to leave the country for "greener pastures" in the US, only to come back home "empty handed" and "poorer".

Mugabe said Zimbabweans were better off in the southern African country as they often came back with "nothing to show for their stay abroad".

Mugabe said this at the weekend during his birthday celebrations in Matopos.

 

Parliament's communications committee will today discuss the appointment of an interim board for the South African Broadcasting Corporation.

A number of SABC board members resigned while an ad hoc committee was looking into the board's fitness to hold office.

The communications committee has been tasked with finding members to fill five positions in the interim board for a period of up to six months.

The process to appoint the interim board first got underway in January when the communications committee met for the first time to discuss the requirements.
